Today's Jewish parents have choices and infant circumcision is one of them. For those who decide not to circumcise, the brit shalom ceremony is an alternative way to welcome a newborn son, give him a Hebrew name, and bring him into the Abrahamic covenant. This book is a comprehensive resource about this important emerging ritual. It provides readers with everything they'll need to host a brit shalom, whether it's being officiated by a rabbi or held more informally. Included are three complete ceremonies to choose from along with the sheet music to Songs for Celebrating Brit Shalom, the beautiful music composed to accompany the ceremonies. Part handbook, part Haggadah-style prayer book, part keepsake, this book is a must for Jewish parents who are questioning circumcision and for rabbis eager to meet the ceremonial needs of today's families.

We are expecting our first child in a couple of months and we are both deeply committed to our child's wholeness, safety, and sexual autonomy (so that means no one's cutting any part of our baby's genitals off)! We're so grateful to have this book, both because of what it will offer us and our family / congregation / rabbi in welcoming this special new person into the world and for the change that it will hopefully encourage in the Jewish community.

What a beautiful book! More and more people are making peaceful childcare a reality. Baby welcoming ceremonies are such a lovely thing, and now a book to support Jewish parents who want to welcome and name their son without circumcision. It's full of great stuff, and is so helpful in making sure your bris is everything you want it to be. Prayers, music, guidance, it's all there. <3 It's also a keepsake. Put in a photo, and give one to each friend or family member who participates in making this day special.
Celebrating Brit Shalom describes and advocates peaceful welcoming ceremony options for new babies. The purpose is to help parents find a way to honor the covenant between Jews and God, but still respecting the decision not to circumcise. The authors give so many helpful tips and recommendations - they discuss the history of Brit Shalom, offer musical selections, advice on how to bring hesitant family members on board, etc. The book includes three different ceremony options that parents and guardians can customize a “Peace and Wholeness Ceremony,” a “Faith and Trust Ceremony” and a “Celebrating Equality Ceremony,”. I think it's wonderful that they offer different alternatives to make it really feel special and unique to each individual family. I think this book is going to help so many people and revolutionize the way things are done. I love everything about this book. I cannot say enough good things about it. The cover is very beautifully-made, the content goes above and beyond my expectations, and most importantly, it is thoughtfully and brilliantly written. I can't wait to start recommending this!!
A very important book! Parents who question the necessity of following a prescribed religious ritual, but still want their newborn son to be welcomed into the Jewish faith, now have what they need. This short, well written book explains exactly how a brit shalom can be performed. Not only is the entire ceremony set forth and easy to use, but wonderful music can be downloaded for the joyful occasion.

This ceremony is an alternative to the traditional, too often brutal, bris. Newborn infants boys no longer need have a large portion of their foreskin cut off. And parents can do the right thing for both their son and their religion. Also, readers learn there are an ever growing number of rabbis who now accept (and will perform on request) brit shalom as an alternative to a traditional bris.

As adults we cannot consciously recall physical or emotional traumas that occur before the age of two. But countless studies have shown these shocks to the system are never “forgotten” as is believed. Rather they live on, in ways that defy explanation, and profoundly affect how we feel and function throughout our entire lives. This video speaks to the lasting effects of circumcision

Celebrating Brit Shalom is the first ever book for Jewish parents who want to carry forward their heritage, but don’t want their baby hurt, and are also worried about the not so rare dangers of infection, mutilation, and even death. Those who have made themselves informed on the matter also know that removing the foreskin reduces the intensity of sexual pleasure.

Not just Jews are opting out as evidenced by the continuing reduction in circumcisions performed here in the United States. Parents everywhere are now questioning the purported medical benefits of circumcision, given the very many times pediatricians have gone back and forth, saying it is not necessary then saying it is. This, and the increasing awareness that every child has inherent rights, is changing people’s views on how children are treated. We give thanks to the authors of this remarkable book. It is a winner all around for baby, for modern-day parents who want to know they have not harmed their son, and for Judaism.

Celebrating Brit Shalom can be a complete guide for those Jewish families who wish to welcome their baby boys and girls peacefully. In the case of baby boys, of course, this guide provides meaningful Jewish ceremonies for welcoming them without circumcision and stripping away their genital integrity. The book includes three types of ceremonies, each of which families can adapt as they choose. The authors supply spirituality, ritual, music, and songs. This is an incredibly thoughtful, inclusive guide for Jewish families who want to be in the forefront of developing a new tradition for welcoming babies. The book is an inspiration!
A great read to help parents who want to convince family members to protect boys from genital mutilation.
THANK YOU REBECCA! I work w Intaction and all the other bodily autonomy groups and I'm so glad we have copies of your book to show we're not anti-Semitic and Brit Shalom isn't just for girls!
